One Action You Need To Take When Making A Life Decision

One Action You Need To Take When Making A Life Decision

“Be decisive. Right or wrong make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision.” – Unknown

I saw this quote in a co-worker’s cubicle, and I immediately took a picture of it. This quote is hilarious, but it brings up a good point; in our lives, we will all need to make decisions.

Last week, I was thinking about something that was bothering me. I needed to decide on what direction to take. While I was thinking about it, I noticed that I was dealing with fear about the situation. When I recognized it, I asked myself, “What I would I do if I wasn’t afraid?” Shortly after that, I knew exactly what to do.

“Taking Fear Out A Decision Brings Clarity.” – Devon Daniel

Recently I read a book called “The Seven Decisions.” The author Andy Andrews said this and this one quote has changed my view on making decisions…

“WHEN FACED WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A DECISION, I WILL MAKE ONE. I UNDERSTAND THAT GOD DID NOT PUT IN ME THE ABILITY TO ALWAYS MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS. HE DID, HOWEVER, PUT IN ME THE ABILITY TO MAKE A DECISION AND THEN MAKE IT RIGHT.” – Andy Andrews

If we always wait for the perfect time or the ideal situation, we will always be waiting. Life isn’t about waiting for the perfect time; it’s about deciding to take action. Every action is preceded by a decision.

When I read the quote, I paused for a little bit to digest this. I do believe if we are sensitive enough to the leading of God’s Spirit that we can always make the right decision, but most people are not patient enough to wait. I have been guilty of this myself. It’s possible however to have an ability, but not follow through on the ability you have.

I used to be so caught up in ALWAYS making the right choice that I wouldn’t move unless I knew it was right. In the last few years of my life, there was more for me to do, but I didn’t move. Yes I wrote a book and I am proud of that, but there was more!

I should have started to blog consistently YEARS ago. I should have started to do live videos almost a year ago, but I allowed many things to change my mind. I wasn’t sure when the right time was, or if it was the right thing to do in my mind because of various situations in my life. However, I finally understood that I needed to remove fear from the equation. Now I am stepping out in faith.

How Do You Take Fear Out Of A Decision?

Read the Bible and Pray

“And if anyone longs to be wise, ask God for wisdom and He will give it!” – James 1:5 TPT

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes;” – Proverbs 3:5-7

When you have a decision to make, you should always start with the Bible and prayer. You can ask God for wisdom, and He will always give it to you. When He gives you the wisdom that you need, trust in that wisdom. Don’t ask for the answers then ignore them; USE THEM!

Use your imagination.

Think about the things that you would do if you were not afraid. Take a second and ask yourself, “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid of…?” Take a piece of paper and write it out.

Think about a decision that you have to make like:

  • Applying for a new job
  • Writing a book
  • Asking someone out on a date
  • Addressing an issue with a friend or family member

“We act on what we think about the most.” – Devon Daniel

Many times we don’t take action because we are allowing fear to dictate what we meditate on. When fear controls our thought life, our lives will be dead. When we remove fear from the decision, we take a step towards faith.

As in everything, use wisdom and common sense. Just because you removed your fear of swimming, don’t go out and jump in the deep end of the pool without learning how to swim. Use wisdom to guard you from doing something that you know you shouldn’t do.

Start Taking Action

Look at what you wrote down. Is this a dream in your heart? Is it something that you know you should have done years ago but never did? Do you feel stuck because you know you should have moved forward on this but haven’t?

I did my first live video on my Facebook page 3 weeks ago. I was nervous. I talked myself out of it at least 10 times. I even tried using my kids as an excuse “They are too loud. My microphone will pick them up.”

Then I remembered some of my statements that I made in my book:

  • “Stop waiting for the perfect time.”
  • “Jump!”
  • “Start where you are.”

Before I knew it, I was clicking “Go Live” on my computer and I went. Now, I am excited when it’s Monday. I know I get to do another video. My actions were the only thing that quieted the fear.

In your life decisions, take fear out of the equation by using your imagination to change what you are thinking about and start taking action today.

Purposeful Living Today!

Great read Devon. I definitely read it at the time I needed it. I would hate to be a flat squirrel because I’m just standing around contemplating…..

Great Job Devon! This is a timely word as I’ve been doubting a recent decision my husband and I were currently making. Its helps to relieve the fear of stepping out. Keep up the good work!
